The son of Mary, Queen of Scots and her second husband Lord Darnley, James was crowned King of Scotland in 1567, at the age of one on the abdication of his mother, and the country was run until his maturity by a succession of Protestant Regents. In 1603, when James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England from his cousin Elizabeth I, Scotland shared a monarch for the first time with England, Wales and Ireland. His commitment to peace and reconciliation balanced religious divisions, and he successfully held the four nations together under one ruler. Intelligent and scholarly, James was a prolific scholar and theologian who oversaw a flourishing literary culture. His greatest act of patronage was the commissioning of the ‘King James’ translation of the Bible which was published in 1611 and became an influential source for the development of English language and literature for centuries. James's unshakeable belief in the 'Divine Right of Kings', his financial incompetence and devotion to a succession of male favourites such as the Duke of Buckingham, fuelled his critics. As a result he became widely unpopular, particularly after his death, and left a difficult legacy for his son, Charles.
